TUMIS LABU SIAM ( or stir-fried chayote squash)

Tumis labu siam, or stir-fried chayote squash, is a simple and flavorful dish often found in Indonesian and Southeast Asian cuisine. Here's a recipe to make tumis labu siam:

Ingredients:

  • 2 medium-sized chayote squash (labu siam), peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 red chilies, thinly sliced (adjust according to your spice preference)
  • 2 tablespoons cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon fish sauce (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped green onions or cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Chayote Squash: Peel the chayote squash and remove the inner seed. Slice the squash thinly. You can cut them into matchsticks or any desired shape.

  2. Heat the Oil: In a wok or large frying pan, heat the cooking oil over medium-high heat.

  3. Sauté Aromatics: Add the minced garlic, sliced shallots, and red chilies to the hot oil. Sauté until fragrant and the shallots are translucent, about 1-2 minutes.

  4. Add Chayote Squash: Add the sliced chayote squash to the wok. Stir-fry continuously for about 3-4 minutes until the squash is tender but still slightly crisp.

  5. Seasoning: Add the oyster sauce, soy sauce, and fish sauce (if using) to the wok. Stir well to combine and coat the chayote squash evenly with the sauces. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.

  6. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the dish and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if necessary. Be careful with the salt as soy sauce and oyster sauce already contain salt.

  7. Garnish and Serve: Transfer the tumis labu siam to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped green onions or cilantro if desired. Serve hot as a side dish or as part of a larger meal with rice or noodles.

Tips:

  • Chayote squash cooks quickly, so be careful not to overcook it. It should be tender but still retain some crunchiness.
  • You can add other vegetables such as carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas for additional flavor and texture.
  • Adjust the amount of red chilies according to your spice preference. You can also remove the seeds to reduce the heat.
  • For a vegetarian version, you can omit the fish sauce or substitute it with soy sauce.

Enjoy your homemade tumis labu siam!
