TUMIS LABU SIAM ( or stir-fried chayote squash)
Tumis labu siam, or stir-fried chayote squash, is a simple and flavorful dish often found in Indonesian and Southeast Asian cuisine. Here's a recipe to make tumis labu siam:
Ingredients:
- 2 medium-sized chayote squash (labu siam), peeled and thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 shallots, thinly sliced
- 2 red chilies, thinly sliced (adjust according to your spice preference)
- 2 tablespoons cooking oil
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 teaspoon fish sauce (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Chopped green onions or cilantro for garnish (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Chayote Squash: Peel the chayote squash and remove the inner seed. Slice the squash thinly. You can cut them into matchsticks or any desired shape.
Heat the Oil: In a wok or large frying pan, heat the cooking oil over medium-high heat.
Sauté Aromatics: Add the minced garlic, sliced shallots, and red chilies to the hot oil. Sauté until fragrant and the shallots are translucent, about 1-2 minutes.
Add Chayote Squash: Add the sliced chayote squash to the wok. Stir-fry continuously for about 3-4 minutes until the squash is tender but still slightly crisp.
Seasoning: Add the oyster sauce, soy sauce, and fish sauce (if using) to the wok. Stir well to combine and coat the chayote squash evenly with the sauces. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
Adjust Seasoning: Taste the dish and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if necessary. Be careful with the salt as soy sauce and oyster sauce already contain salt.
Garnish and Serve: Transfer the tumis labu siam to a serving dish. Garnish with chopped green onions or cilantro if desired. Serve hot as a side dish or as part of a larger meal with rice or noodles.
Tips:
- Chayote squash cooks quickly, so be careful not to overcook it. It should be tender but still retain some crunchiness.
- You can add other vegetables such as carrots, bell peppers, or snap peas for additional flavor and texture.
- Adjust the amount of red chilies according to your spice preference. You can also remove the seeds to reduce the heat.
- For a vegetarian version, you can omit the fish sauce or substitute it with soy sauce.
Enjoy your homemade tumis labu siam!
